9 to 25 Inaugural Meeting

On June 16, 2021, Marin 9 to 25 held its inaugural meeting, bringing together stakeholders from throughout Marin County, including youth age 9 to 25. The meeting highlighted the need for increased collaboration among programs seeking to improve social and health outcomes for youth in the county. The meeting included a review of the Marin 9 to 25 Charter, a keynote address, a breakout room jamboard session, three lightning rounds, and a call to action.

Alex Briscoe, Principal of the Children’s Trust provided the keynote address where he underscored the need for healing-centered schools and investment in youth mental health. He opened his speech by saying, “Mental health is far more than a response to pathology. It is a support for healthy development, and a critical strategy for social justice.” The address expanded on this by discussing how resources could and should be leveraged to expand access and increase the participation of beneficiaries in our system.

The lightning rounds consisted of a five-minute presentation and a five-minute Q&A session for three county initiatives: the RxSafe Marin School Needs Assessment[PDF] presented by Jackie Davis (Adolescent Programs and Evaluation), the Crisis Text Line presented by Julia Reinhard (Board of Supervisors Intern), and the School Works Initiative , presented by Lauren Fernandez (County of Marin Probation Department), Darlene Flores and Isaura Recendiz (North Marin Community Services).

For the jamboard session, attendees were separated into two breakout rooms: one with youth and one with non-youth. Each group mapped what services youth need in the county and what services were available to various populations, along with channels to access these services. Educational, skill-building, and mental health services were indicated as the services most needed for youth. According to this activity, youth are most likely to access services through school, family, and social media channels.

At the end of the meeting, announcements were made, as well as a request for feedback via an online survey. Participants made suggestions for future lightning rounds, which include juvenile justice, telehealth access, teen clinics, and school wellness programs. Workgroup ideas were also solicited, and included restorative justice, access, and harm reduction.

Marin 9 to 25 meetings will be held quarterly, with our next meeting scheduled to take place on September 3, 4-5pm.
